That's the standard points-based grading method: total earned over total possible, times 100. It is not an average of each item's individual percentage — a 5-point quiz and a 100-point exam don't count equally just because they're each "one item." Add every assignment, quiz, and test, enter earned and possible points for each, and the calculator returns your overall grade. Extra credit is supported: if you earned more points than an item was worth, enter the higher number — your total, and your overall grade, can legitimately go over 100%.
Worked Examples
Example: three graded items, no extra credit
- Quiz 1: 8 earned / 10 possible
- Assignment 1: 45 earned / 50 possible
- Test 1: 18 earned / 20 possible
- Total earned = 8 + 45 + 18 = 71
- Total possible = 10 + 50 + 20 = 80
- Grade = (71 / 80) × 100 = 88.75%
Example: extra credit pushes the total over 100%
- Homework 1: 105 earned / 100 possible (5 points of extra credit)
- Quiz 2: 48 earned / 50 possible
- Total earned = 105 + 48 = 153
- Total possible = 100 + 50 = 150
- Grade = (153 / 150) × 100 = 102%
- The result is not capped at 100% — it reflects the extra credit earned.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my grade go over 100%?
Yes, if any item's earned points exceed its possible points (extra credit), the overall percentage can legitimately exceed 100%. This calculator does not cap or clamp the result.
What if I haven't entered any possible points yet?
With no graded items, or with every item's possible points set to 0, the overall percentage is undefined (there's nothing to divide by) — add at least one item with possible points greater than 0 to see a grade.
Does this average each item's percentage instead?
No. This calculator sums all points earned and all points possible first, then divides once — the standard points-based method. Averaging each item's percentage separately would weight a small quiz the same as a large exam, which isn't how points-based grading works.
Can I use decimal point values?
Yes — earned and possible points can include decimals (for example, 8.5 out of 10), and the calculator handles them exactly.
