How It's Calculated

Formula

F = m \times a

Force is the product of mass and acceleration (Newton's second law): a mass in kilograms multiplied by an acceleration magnitude in meters per second squared gives a force in newtons. This calculator is a scalar-magnitude V1: both mass and acceleration are entered as non-negative values, so no direction or sign is tracked. This is distinct from the Weight Calculator, which multiplies mass by a specific gravitational acceleration (Earth, Moon, or Mars) to find gravitational weight — this Force Calculator accepts any arbitrary acceleration magnitude, not just gravity.

Worked Examples

10 kg mass, 3 m/s² acceleration

  1. Force = 10 kg x 3 m/s² = 30 N.

Zero acceleration

  1. Force = 5 kg x 0 m/s² = 0 N. A stationary or non-accelerating mass exerts zero net force.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the Weight Calculator?

No. This calculator computes force from any mass and any acceleration magnitude (F = m x a). The Weight Calculator instead multiplies mass specifically by a celestial body's gravitational acceleration (Earth, Moon, or Mars) to find gravitational weight — weight is a special case of force.

Does this support negative or directional force?

No. V1 is a scalar magnitude calculation: mass and acceleration are both entered as zero or positive values, and force direction/sign is not tracked.

Can mass or acceleration be zero?

Yes. A mass or acceleration of zero is mathematically valid here and yields a force of zero — this calculator only multiplies, so there is no division-by-zero concern.
