How It's Calculated

Formula

\text{boundary weight (kg)} = 25.0 \times \text{height (m)}^2
\text{excess} = \max(0, \text{current weight} - \text{boundary weight})

This calculator reports how far, if at all, your current weight sits above the BMI 25.0 category boundary for your height — the same boundary this site's BMI Calculator uses to separate the "Healthy weight" and "Overweight" categories. It works by solving the BMI formula (BMI = weight / height²) for weight at BMI 25.0, then subtracting that boundary weight from your entered weight. If your weight is at or below the boundary, the excess amount is reported as zero — it is never shown as a negative number. This boundary is an EXCLUSIVE threshold, not an inclusive healthy maximum: this site's BMI Calculator classifies BMI 25.0 itself as "Overweight," so the figure above describes the amount above the category boundary, not a required weight-loss target. Age is collected only to determine whether the adult CDC boundary label applies (age 20+) — the same rule this site's BMI Calculator uses for its own category labels; the underlying arithmetic is identical at any age. This is an estimate for general informational and educational purposes, based on a published formula — it is not a medical diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for individualized advice from a qualified healthcare provider. Like BMI itself, this boundary-based figure cannot distinguish muscle mass from fat mass and does not account for frame size or individual health context.

Worked Examples

Height 175 cm (1.75 m), weight 90 kg

  1. Boundary weight: 25 × 1.75² = 25 × 3.0625 ≈ 76.56 kg
  2. Excess: max(0, 90 − 76.56) ≈ 13.44 kg above the boundary

Height 175 cm (1.75 m), weight 70 kg

  1. Boundary weight: 25 × 1.75² ≈ 76.56 kg
  2. Excess: max(0, 70 − 76.56) → weight is below the boundary, so excess is reported as 0

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the boundary weight an inclusive healthy maximum?

No. This site's BMI Calculator classifies BMI 25.0 itself as "Overweight," not "Healthy weight." The boundary weight shown here is the exclusive point the healthy BMI range ends, not a weight that is itself still classified healthy.

Why is age collected if it doesn't change the arithmetic?

Age is used only to determine whether the adult CDC boundary label applies — the same age-20-and-up rule this site's BMI Calculator uses. Below age 20, CDC uses a different BMI-for-age percentile system that this calculator does not implement, so the boundary figure is shown with a scope note instead of the adult label. The excess amount itself is computed the same way at any age.

Can the excess amount be negative?

No. If your current weight is at or below the boundary weight for your height, this calculator reports zero excess rather than a negative number.

Does this tool tell me how much weight I need to lose?

No. It reports the amount your current weight sits above a BMI category boundary — a reference figure, not an individualized weight-loss prescription or medical recommendation.
